SERECO has contributed to some of the most significant soil decontamination projects in Spain. Reputable companies have entrusted us with key projects such as the decontamination of the Flix Reservoir in Tarragona, the Miño Estuary in Galicia, and soil washing for hydrocarbon-contaminated fuel storage facilities.
The Spanish Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI), through EEA Grants, supported the successful DESTER project, which developed a plant for treating soils contaminated by radioactive isotopes.
Our team has also pioneered a decontamination technique for soils affected by radioactive isotopes.
We are certified by ENAC (National Accreditation Entity) as an Inspection Entity for “activities related to environmental inspection of potentially contaminated land and associated groundwater.” We apply the most suitable decontamination and soil remediation techniques for each of our projects. No matter the scope of the issue, type of contaminant, or project stage, SERECO can assist with full success assurance.
In-office review and data collection on the site (historical study, physical environment, and field visit).
Development of a comprehensive Characterization Plan to define sampling and identify contaminants present.
Sample collection, laboratory analysis, and results evaluation (exploratory and/or detailed) following ENAC 17020 accreditation.
Evaluation of potential health and ecological risks posed by contaminants.
Based on the risk assessment, the site and/or water are classified as contaminated or non-contaminated.
Our accreditation by ENAC under UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17020 reflects our technical expertise, highly skilled team, and top-quality management of activities. We offer “turnkey” contaminated soil investigation and remediation projects, guiding clients through all project stages.
We offer “turnkey” soil investigation and remediation projects, accompanying clients through all stages, regardless of project advancement or scale.
The final output in this phase is a preliminary soil quality report, summarizing all collected data and comparing laboratory sample contamination levels with the Generic Reference Levels (NGR) set by the relevant authority.
If contamination levels are within legal limits, the project concludes, and the soil is classified as non-contaminated. If contamination exceeds NGR levels, further steps are required.
The QRA outcome, factoring in contamination type and level, hydrogeological characteristics, potential receptors, exposure pathways, etc., results in:
– Acceptable Risk: The soil is classified as altered, concluding the study.
– Unacceptable Risk: The soil is classified as contaminated, requiring corrective actions to restore it to a state that poses no health or ecological risk.
Soil remediation involves implementing corrective measures to restore soils to their original condition, or at least to a state that does not pose potential risks to human health or ecosystems. Remediation techniques vary widely depending on physical characteristics (geology, hydrogeology), type and concentration of contaminants, and other factors.
SERECO performs environmental restoration and soil and groundwater decontamination using various in situ and ex situ technologies, helping clients return contaminated land to its natural state through comprehensive solutions.
We help our clients by providing comprehensive solutions to return contaminated land to its natural state.
Once soil is classified as contaminated, it is essential to take corrective actions to restore it. The suitability of each technique depends on factors like site geology and hydrogeology, contaminant type and concentration, and affected area. SERECO has extensive experience applying a range of techniques:
We maintain direct relationships and partnerships with leading environmental sector companies. With top-tier suppliers, we ensure all types of projects are completed with guaranteed quality and client satisfaction.
SERECO has extensive experience treating soils contaminated by hydrocarbons, heavy metals, organochlorines, and more. Driven by our dedication to innovation, SERECO developed a decontamination technique for soils contaminated by radioactive isotopes, successfully applying this after concluding an R&D project in collaboration with CDTI and the European EEA Grants program. This technique is currently in use on land surrounding a decommissioned nuclear power plant.
